1st European Chess Solving Championship
Legnica, 17-19 June 2005
Invitation
The Polish Chess Federation and the Chess Club "Miedz" Legnica have the honour to invite all delegates of the FIDE Permanent Commission for Chess Composition (PCCC), national teams and individual solvers, chess composers and all those interested in problem chess, to attend the 1st European Chess Solving Championship (ECSC). The Championship will be held from Friday 17th June (arrival) to Sunday 19th June 2005 (departure) at Qubus Hotel in Legnica, Poland.
Getting there
Legnica is situated in the south-west of the Silesian plains on the borderline between two geographical regions, the fertile lands of the south and the sandy soils of the north, with its many forests. Everywhere in Lower Silesia can be easily reached from here, and the major urban centres of the
region are less than 100 km away. Legnica is the crossroads of two major European routes: the East-West A4 motorway and Highway 3 connecting northern Poland with Southern Europe. The town is also connected by important rail routes running from west to east and from north to south. The latter route is particularly
significant as it is part of the international railway line connecting Ukraine and Russia with Central and Eastern Europe. Legnica is located at the confluence of the Kaczawa and Czarna Woda Rivers on the borderlands between the Sudeten Mountains and the Silesian Plains, at an altitude of 113 to 168 metres above sea level. It has a population of 109,030 and covers an area of 56.3 km2. The town has some of the warmest weather in Poland- the average annual temperature is over 8.5 °C, with an average annual rainfall of about 400 mm. The warm climate and the long growing season benefit the environment, which is green for more of the year than in other parts of the country, a fact which Legnica was renowned for even before the Second World War. The mild weather and the high number of sunny days have earned Legnica the title of the warmest town in Poland.
Legnica is also of importance for tourists, thanks to its many architectural sights. It has 91 protected sites, 2 protected urban centres (Tarninów and the city centre) together with about 1200 listed buildings. These include religious sites (churches), defensive structures such as town walls, towers and gates, residential buildings (a castle), public buildings and tenement houses as well as parks which help to keep the town green.
